Course Description:

This course provides training for occupational therapists who wish to specialise in driver assessment and rehabilitation. A combination of theoretical and practical sessions are conducted by occupational therapists and driving instructors with considerable clinical experience in the area. At the conclusion of the course successful participants will qualify as registered occupational therapy driver assessors.

High standards of achievement are set in this intensive course, to reflect the level of responsibility assumed by a qualified driving assessor. Participants are required to complete both driving and theoretical course components including a practical driving test and assignments that must be submitted during the course. All assessment tasks are graded at a level appropriate for a post-graduate subject and a satisfactory standard must be achieved before a certificate of course completion and a driving assessor registration number is issued.

Suitable for:

To be eligible to enrol applicants must be a qualified Occupational Therapist; provide a certified copy of their occupational therapy degree or their AHPRA number during the course; have a minimum of two years postgraduate experience; and, hold a current driver’s license.

Course Delivery:

This course is presented over 2 weeks face-to-face from 9am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea is provided.

This course is for occupational therapists who are not specialists in driving but who address driving as a part of their clinical role or who are asked by medical teams to decide if clients requires referral for further driving assessment. Course Description:

The Commercial Vehicle Driver Assessment & Rehabilitation is a 1 Day course designed to extend knowledge and skills in commercial vehicle driver assessment and rehabilitation for qualified occupational therapy driver assessors. The course provides therapists with the tools they need to conduct heavy vehicle assessments for all classes of trucks and buses, forklifts, and motorbikes. Performance Analysis of Driving Ability (P-Drive) – A Standardised On-Road Assessment of Driving Performance

Course Description:

Performance Analysis of Driving Ability (P-Drive) is a standardised, valid and reliable observational assessment of driving ability developed by Dr Ann-Helen Patomella, Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. Occupational Therapists can use P-Drive on-road when assessing driving ability of clients diagnosed with stroke and other medical conditions that may impact driving performance. This course is presented in conjunction with Dr Patomella and includes certification to use the assessment tool once course requirements are met.

Course Description:

A half day workshop is provided for GPs and other medical specialists in screening patient fitness to drive.

Topics Presented:
  • Screening cognitive fitness to drive: reliability, predictive validity and practicality of existing tools for use in medical practice, including touchscreen DriveSafe DriveAware (a brief cognitive driver screen designed for GPs).
  • The impact of stroke, brain injury, aneurysm and other neurological impairments on driving capacity and potential for return to driving.
  • Applying the Austroads Medical Guidelines / Working within licensing authority policies and procedures

Course Description:

This course provides training for driving instructors who wish to specialise in rehabilitation of drivers with medical conditions, disabilities and injuries. Driving instructors often work in this area with occupational therapy driver assessors. Driver rehabilitation programmes involve teaching drivers with cognitive difficulties (e.g., due to a stroke or brain injury), physical impairments (e.g., due to loss or paralysis of a limb), vision impairments (e.g., due to loss of vision in one eye), anxiety, and mental health conditions.

  • Common physical, cognitive and vision impairments and implications for driving
